Effective treatment for tooth infections

Root canal treatment, also known as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy, is necessary when decay, deep restorations, or trauma damage the pulp inside a tooth. The pulp contains the tooth’s nerves and blood vessels. When it becomes infected, it cannot heal on its own and must be treated to prevent further pain, infection, and damage.

An infected pulp can lead to an abscess, which may spread through the tip of the tooth root and affect the surrounding bone. Symptoms may include sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets; pain; swelling; pain when biting or applying pressure; or a bad taste in the mouth. In some cases, however, there may be no noticeable symptoms, and the problem may only be discovered during a routine dental checkup.

During a root canal, the infected pulp is removed, and the canals inside the tooth are cleaned and disinfected. The canals are then filled to help prevent reinfection. Without root canal treatment, the only alternative may be to extract the tooth.

After treatment, a core build-up and crown are often recommended to restore strength, function, and appearance to the tooth.
